For 19 years, the Louisville Urban League in partnership with The First Tee of Louisville and the PGA of America has hosted this scramble as a fundraiser for the Urban Youth Golf Program Scholarship Fund named in honor of George “G.G.” Johnson The scholarship fund has provided more than $100,000 to 43 graduating high school students.
GEORGE “G.G.” JOHNSON
George Johnson was the first and only African-American head golf pro in Kentucky. He began to learn the game at the age of 15 when he caddied at a segregated country club in Georgia. He turned pro in 1964 and qualified for the US Open in 1965. He received his tour card after successfully completing the PGA qualifying program (or graduating “Q” school) in 1968 and began playing in tournaments with the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Miller Barber and Tom Kite. In 1971 he won the Azalea Open and became the fourth African-American to ever win a PGA tournament. George spent a total of 10 years on the PGA Tour and three on the Senior Tour and remained a Lifetime Member of the PGA. In 1997, George became the head golf pro at Bobby Nichols Golf Course here in Louisville Metro. Unfortunately, George passed away in March of 2014, but his legacy and passion for the game still live on through those he taught and the lives he has touched.
The Urban Youth Golf Program and its partner, The First Tee of Louisville, work diligently to produce the George “G.G.” Johnson Scholarship Golf Scramble annually. The Louisville Urban League has operated the PGA of America funded Urban Youth Golf Program for 15 years. In 2005, The First Tee was created to serve as an umbrella organization for the Urban Youth Golf Program and two other youth golf programs and provide Golf and Life Skills to the young people in these groups as well as new participants in the programs. The Urban Youth Golf Program is active in recruiting participants for the youth golf programs and offers a wide range of opportunities, incentives, and benefits, all designed to help youth be successful and develop into positive and productive citizens which include cultural enrichment, academic & career development activities.
The Urban Youth Golf Program is a youth development program of the Louisville Urban League that enhances the lives of young people in the Louisville Metropolitan Area through exposure to the game of golf.
The Mission of The First Tee of Louisville is to enrich the lives of young people in the metropolitan Louisville area by providing unique programs and affordable facilities which promote character development and positive life skills through the game of golf.
