The_Reverend_Kevin_Cosby_photoThe Louisville Urban League congratulates Simmons College of Kentucky and its president, the Rev. Kevin Cosby, on being granted “Historically Black Colleges and Universities” status by the U.S. Department of Education. With the achievement, Simmons—a private black college located at 1018 South 7th Street in Louisville—becomes the 107th historically black college to achieve the designation.

Among the schools that have received the distinctive status are Howard University in Washington, D.C., Morehouse College in Atlanta, Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, as well as Kentucky State University in Frankfort.

simmonslogo-for-web2“The historical status achieved by Simmons will make college more accessible and affordable for African Americans in tough economic and social situations,” said Ben Richmond, President and CEO of the Louisville Urban League. “I urge members of the African American community to step up and help Simmons become strong by giving their time, talent and financial support. Such action will have a positive impact for generations of African Americans to come.”
