Community update:
Regarding the incident at JTown High School - we understand that the entire matter remains under review by JCPS. We believe a thorough review is necessary and look forward to the recommendations of the administration. We also would like access to any additional video of the incident so that we can make a full assessment.

While we have grave concerns about student safety and the number of fights in that school, the community is under the impression that the first officer involved was not breaking up a fight but instead is accused of escalating a verbal altercation between students. Regretfully, we can have no informed opinion as we have not had access to the school video, which we have been led to believe shows the beginning of the entire incident.

Further, we also need clarification on the SRO’s role in the incident.

We want students, teachers and and all school personnel to be safe, but we must achieve that without creating public school jails.

We look forward to reviewing all available video.

The need for school safety is crucial and we must look to humane models as we reconstruct our system.
