Louisville Urban League on Facebook

Stephen Reily donated $300,000 to the Louisville Urban League today. This money will be used to help our people get their records cleared. Read what he said today 👇🏾:

When I was running for Metro Council, I was shocked at the number of people - engaged citizens who were interested in the race - who told me they could not give me their vote.

Not because they were voting for another candidate - but because they had once committed a crime.

As I started paying attention to this issue I realized the impact went far beyond voting. Criminal records prohibit hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians from getting good-paying jobs - or even renting an apartment. Which, in turn, impacts families. Our neighborhoods. And our city.

Almost two years ago, the state legislature - in a rare bipartisan success - approved a bill that would allow former convicts, in certain circumstances, to clear their records. Freeing them to get jobs, rent an apartment, and vote. Just like every other citizen.

Yet the bill imposed heavy fees for each expungement, and most people have to hire a lawyer to complete the process. Which is an expense beyond the reach of many who have already paid their price to society.

Your level of citizenship should not depend on your level of income.

The Reily Reentry Program dramatically expands the work of the Urban League in supporting our neighbors who want to rebuild their lives, to fully re-enter their communities and to exercise their rights.

The rights that I have are the rights that everyone should have.

I am excited to invite hundred of fellow citizens to join us in building stronger neighboords, a stronger community, and a stronger state.

Because we can't succeed - Louisville can't succeed - Kentucky can't succeed - unless everyone can succeed.
