Video of Louisville Metro police officers arresting Jarrus Ransom on Sunday has been shared all over social media.
The police chief has called for an investigation into what happened, but some people want the chief to release the body camera video of the arrest.
Police said they can’t release that video during an open investigation.
On Monday afternoon, Ransom and protesters returned to the Kroger at 27th Street and West Broadway, where the incident took place.
The video shows a Louisville Metro police officer punch Ransom several times.
According to the arrest report, Ransom, 32, was pulled over for having tinted windows and was acting “suspicious” when officers talked to him.
Police said they found three pills in a soda can and that Ransom lunged forward, ramming an officer.
The arrest report said officers restrained Ransom, but doesn’t mention anything about the punches.
The report also said Ransom gave police permission to search his car, but his family and friends say that’s not true.
“Why is Louisville accepting this behavior? We’re not. We’re coming for justice,” said Wanda McIntyre of King Solomon Baptist Church.
A group wants police to release the body camera video of the arrest.
They said that’s the only way they’ll know what really happened.
But LMPD’s police chief has called for an investigation and a spokesperson for the department said the video cannot be released during that process.
The CEO of the Louisville Urban League wants to see the body camera video, too.
“I am hopeful that the chief will do something to help us understand more clearly why certain choices were made, because it is very difficult at this point to defend what is shown in the videos,” Sadiqa Reynolds said.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said the video will be released, when it can be.
“Yes, as a matter of course that will be done. I mean, one of the purposes of body cameras is that that is the record of what took place,” Fischer said.
The investigation will determine if officers violated any procedures during the arrest.
Louisville Metro police have not released the name of the officer involved.
They said they cannot make any other comments on the case because of the investigation.
Ransom is facing several charges including resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and excessive window tinting.
He’s scheduled to be in court on Wednesday.
