Stand Up for Volunteering: Brittney’s Story

When Brittney moved to Louisville in 2024, the first thing on her to-do list was to find a way to connect and give back to the community. After researching online, she found the Louisville Urban League and really connected with our mission. Brittney had great role models growing up who really emphasized the importance of giving back to others.

As a professional musician, Brittney completed her undergraduate degree at the Johns Hopkins Peabody Conservatory and earned her master’s at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She began playing guitar at age 8 and began playing the bassoon at 12. Brittney combined her love of music and volunteering this spring by joining the Music for a Purpose concert, which benefited the Louisville Urban League.

When asked about the concert experience, she stated, “It was so much fun getting to know people who were also committed to LUL’s mission and getting to use my musicianship for a cause I already loved. I’ve never gotten the chance to play an intimate house concert before, and I can now say it’s my favorite type of concert hall! Being able to incorporate my passion for bassoon and advocacy with the LUL was such a fun and rewarding experience. The trio I performed was also written by a Louisville native, Valerie Coleman. I performed Valerie Coleman’s quintet pieces during my master’s degree, and she quickly turned into my favorite chamber music composer. The way she captures so much culture in each of her pieces is inspiring, and I was so grateful to be able to share that at the house concert.”

The Louisville Urban League has many different opportunities to get involved: Project Kilimo Urban Farm, VITA Tax Preparation, chaperoning college field trips, and even playing the bassoon for a good cause! With so many needs for help, there is something for everyone to connect with and give back. For more information on volunteering with the Urban League, visit lul.org/volunteer.
