The JCPS Busing Plan Needs to Slow Down

We all know the Jefferson County Public School district is facing a significant transportation issue. For the record, the Louisville Urban League does not believe this problem originated with JCPS and its current administration. This is a Louisville problem.

Were it not for deeply rooted segregationist policies, we might not be here. Were it not for the legacy of redlining and discrimination reducing groups of people to poverty and preventing them from driving, we might not be here. Were it not for years of neglect and disinvestment in transportation infrastructure and solutions, we might not be here. Were it not for going decades without building new school buildings, we might not be here. But we are here, and unfortunately, JCPS is saddled with the burden of navigating a problem not of their own making– a burden for which there are few good solutions.

Still, JCPS must be accountable for making the best and most equitable decisions for the families they serve, and the proposed change to discontinue busing for magnet and traditional schools does not meet that bar. The Louisville Urban League asks the district to reject this singular proposal and explore other options with community input that might be better suited for our students.

Listed below are the schools impacted by this change. If your student is negatively effected, you must speak up and let the district know!
