Stand Up for Jobs: Theorpus’s Story

Theorpus Oates is a 78-year-old retiree with a background in maintenance, plumbing, and electrical work. He heard about the Urban Seniors Jobs Program (USJP) through other participants and decided to join along with his wife.

Theorpus said, “What stood out to me from the beginning was the Urban League’s commitment. They didn’t just offer training; they also provided practical information and connected me to resources.” His training included computer courses, classes on communication, and working with a job coach to update his résumé to search for jobs. Beyond workforce training, the League provides wraparound services to support client success, including internet access, utility payment, or support with social security. “That level of care was more than I expected and truly valuable.”

With USJP’s job placement, Theorpus began working as a Facilities Technician at REBOUND, Inc., a community development corporation that builds and manages affordable housing in West Louisville. He maintains office spaces and properties through cleaning and general upkeep, while also working with staff to complete tasks as necessary.

“This program has not only helped me strengthen the skills I already had, but also pushed me to learn new ones. The result has been better employment opportunities, which have also benefited my family. I’m grateful for the chance to grow in this stage of life, and I see USJP as a place where people can grow their skills and improve their lives. I definitely think other seniors should join.”

When REBOUND Office Manager Ernestine Woods was asked why she considered hiring an older worker, she said, “Older workers bring valuable life experience and a solid work ethic. They often notice details that younger people might overlook and can help guide younger generations in the workplace. USJP provides a platform for them to continue contributing while also providing new skills.”
