March 20, 2020
Dear JCPS Families,
We promised to keep you informed of any new developments regarding your child’s school and education as we continue to navigate the Coronavirus health crisis together. Today, we have some very important news to share:
- All JCPS schools will remain closed at least through April 20th as recommended by Governor Beshear.
- JCPS is opting to use its Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) days beginning Tuesday, April 7th.
What this means for you and your child
NTI days, which use a mixture of online activities as well as hands-on learning, would count as school days. These days would not have to be made up at the end of the school year. However, the at-home course work would now be required, would be graded and will require teachers to be available to students.
We have developed a plan to get Chromebooks to every student who needs one. We are also working on a plan to ensure students have access to the internet.
To the JCPS families whose children already have access to a laptop, computer, PC, iPad or other technology and wi-fi at home, you won’t need to do anything to have your child ready to participate in the NTI days. Your teacher(s) and school will be contacting you. But we do need your help in spreading the word about this initiative to your neighbors, friends, church members and child’s classmates who may not get these messages. You may also know a family that needs technical help with a Chromebook or connecting to the online lessons provided by teachers.
We know you have questions about how all of this will work. We will have many more details on our plan, including how to get a Chromebook and how to find internet access, in additional communications to you over the next few days.
We understand this will take a big effort by our entire community to ensure every JCPS student is ready to resume required schoolwork April 7th.
Thank you for your patience and flexibility. The JCPS family is strong and committed to the educational success of every one of our kids.
