Transformational Gift From Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott Will Allow Louisville Urban League To Support And Sustain Empowerment Programs

Louisville, KY, (October 31, 2022)—The Louisville Urban League announced today a transformational gift of $5.7 million from Philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott, one of the largest gifts in the affiliate’s 102-year history.

“We’re honored and grateful that Ms. Scott and her team have recognized the Urban League’s value and impact on the community,” said Sadiqa Reynolds, Louisville Urban League President and CEO. “By placing racial equity and social justice at the forefront of her philanthropic mission, Ms. Scott is shining a much-needed spotlight on the nation’s structural and institutional limitations and helping to build a stronger, more resilient society for everyone. And she is doing it in such a way, as to show her support of and respect for Black leadership.”

“Historically, Black people and Black-led and mission-driven organizations have not had the same access to investment and wealth-building opportunities. Thus, we are pleased to use the contribution to support and sustain our work.” Reynolds said.

The Louisville Urban League is one of 25 National Urban League affiliates around the nation that received similar donations from Ms. Scott, who in 2019 signed The Giving Pledge, a promise by the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes. The gift is even more significant to Louisville as Jefferson County Public Schools–the city’s public school district–also announced receipt of  a $20m gift from Ms. Scott

“Ms. Scott’s investment in Louisville says a great deal about what needs to happen here, but it also speaks to what is possible,” Reynolds said. “We have the opportunity to build on some very important equity work in our schools and across our city. We are honored that she sees and values the work of Civil Rights leaders, particularly in times like these. We also commend the National Urban League President, Marc Morial, and affiliate services for their unapologetic leadership in Black and underserved communities across this country.”
