Intensive Tutoring Program
The Louisville Urban League is committed to helping students build the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school. Through our partnership with local Kumon Learning Centers, eligible students can receive a scholarship for up to 12 months of individualized tutoring in math and reading. Kumon’s proven learning method helps students strengthen foundational skills, improve academic performance, develop independent learning habits, and gain the confidence needed to reach their full potential.
Interested families of Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) students enrolled in Kindergarten through 12th grade (K–12) can apply for the Intensive Tutoring Program by completing the program application and providing the information needed to determine student eligibility.
Application Process
- Schedule An Assessment Appointment
Choose a participating location below and schedule an assessment appointment. - Complete the Application
Submit an Intensive Tutoring Program application for each student requesting tutoring support. - Provide Academic Information
Families may be asked to provide each student’s recent report card, MAP assessment scores, or other academic indicators to help identify the areas of need. - Complete a Kumon Assessment
Students must complete a placement assessment with a participating Kumon Learning Center to determine their current skill level. - Eligibility Review & Decision
The Louisville Urban League will review the student’s application, academic information, and program eligibility requirements. Families will be notified via a decision letter once the eligibility review is complete. Approved students will receive the next steps for enrollment.
Please note: Completing an application does not guarantee a scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on student eligibility, demonstrated academic need, available funding, and program capacity.
Wellington Kumon
Wellington Kumon Learning Center opened in May 2023 in the Newburg/ West Buechel area of Louisville. The driving force behind its creation was owner Ayisha Hayes Taylor, who believed access to tutoring services like this could help close the achievement gap for JCPS students. Hayes Taylor worked in the JCPS school system for 13 years and then went through the Louisville Urban League’s Entrepreneurship program to support opening the franchise. Since opening, this location has become one of the fastest-growing centers in North America and has received numerous awards and accolades.
