On December 3, 2021, friends and supporters of the Louisville Urban League will gather to honor the work of the League over the past year. Despite the various challenges facing our community, the League has continued to serve and support those in need. This year, we are honored to announce that the 2021 Louisville Urban League Annual IMPACT Report Luncheon will feature the incomparable Xernona Clayton.

Xernona Clayton is the Founder, President and CEO of the Trumpet Awards Foundation, Inc. and Creator of the Foundation’s Trumpet Awards. She was born in 1930 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Tennessee State University in 1952 and in 1965, Xernona moved to Atlanta, where she accepted a position with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and worked closely with the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She also traveled extensively with Mrs. Coretta Scott King on her nationwide tours.

Ms. Clayton began her television career in 1967 and became the south’s first Black person to have her own television show. She was employed at Turner Broadcasting for nearly 30 years where she served as a corporate executive. In 1988, Xernona Clayton was appointed Corporate Vice President for Urban Affairs with Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.  In this capacity, she directed internal and external projects for the company and served as liaison between Turner Broadcasting and civic groups in Atlanta and across the country.  As a corporate executive, Ms. Clayton was one of the highest-ranking female employees in the Turner Broadcasting System.

Dedicated to promoting racial understanding, Xernona Clayton has been a leader in civic projects and civil rights activities for several years. It will be an honor to have her and her legendary brilliance on display at this year’s luncheon on December 3.
