Ayisha’s Story

Ayisha Hayes Taylor didn’t set out to be the owner of a Kumon Learning Center. As a busy mom of 6 with her own small business, Hayes-Taylor thought she was helping out a friend. That friend was former LUL President, Sadiqa Reynolds, who tapped Hayes-Taylor for a favor. In support of its Education goals, the Urban League wanted to make a greater impact in the lives of students in our communities to close the opportunity gap. In 2022 LUL began providing scholarships for students to attend intensive tutoring at area Kumon centers around the city, but those locations were travel cumbersome for many families. If only someone would open a location in an area near our affected communities.

That someone became Hayes-Taylor. She went through the arduous journey to qualify as a Kumon Learning Center Director which took her back to school, refreshing herself of long-forgotten algebraic formulas. Hayes-Taylor partnered with the Urban League’s Center for Entrepreneurship for support to fund the capital needed to apply for franchising. The late nights and hard work paid off. In May of 2023, the Wellington Kumon Learning Center officially opened. The center is located near a highly impacted community, just off a major interstate, and closer to Louisville’s West End.
