Jefferson County Public Schools will undergo major changes in the way students are assigned to schools – especially children in western Louisville – under Superintendent Marty Pollio’s proposal to overhaul the student assignment plan.

Pollio’s plan would stop forced busing of West End children, giving them the choice to attend a school closer to home or farther away. The idea is to end the unfair practice of putting the burden of diversifying schools on the backs of Black children. But many are concerned the change would create high-poverty, mostly Black schools in western Louisville that won’t be equipped to serve their students.

What specifically are the proposed changes to the student assignment plan? How will children in western Louisville be affected? What is the plan to ensure West End schools have the needed resources to be successful?

The Courier Journal and the Louisville Urban League are teaming up to present a panel discussion designed to answer these questions and more. And we are requesting your participation.
