The West Louisville Chess Club is prepping for a big regional competition.

The 18th annual Queen City Classic starts next weekend in Cincinnati.

Last year, one group took home first place in its category and four students placed too.

The club is the largest team from Louisville competing.

“We’re representing the city of Louisville and we’re representing the commonwealth of Kentucky and I think these young people deserve some recognition for that, so I really wish more people would come on by and say hello, give them an encouraging word,” said senior coach Corbin Seavers.

The West Louisville Chess club was founded in 2016 by the Louisville Urban League.

Seavers says chess helps the kids with problem solving, critical thinking, discipline and teamwork.

Hundreds of players will compete in next weekends tournament.
